What is the Amalgamated Transit Union?

The Amalgamated Transit Union, founded in 1892, is the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. Today, the ATU includes over 180,000 members in 270 local unions spread across 46 states and nine provinces.

What type of work do ATU members perform?

The ATU represents over 180,000 men and women in all phases of the transit industry, including bus operators, mechanics, cleaners, ticket agents, baggage handlers, clerical, supervisors, cafeteria and other personnel. These members operate the transit systems - bus, rail and ferry in virtually every major city in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, the ATU represents many non-transit public and private employees, involved in jobs such as road maintenance, sanitation service, paramedics, armored car, emergency medical, school bus drivers and others.

What has the ATU accomplished for its members?

ATU members enjoy the highest wages and the best benefit packages in the transit industry. Their contracts compare favorably with those of workers in equivalent or similar jobs in other industries. Due to the union's sucesses in securing job protection legislation, ATU members involved in Public Transit also enjoy relative job stability and security.
